Butyrate Max Bioactivity

Sodium butyrate dietary supplement: intestinal barrier, flora

No reviews

  • An exceptional source of encapsulated sodium butyrate, an important support for the intestinal barrier and microbiota.
  • A high dose of 1,000 mg butyrate per day.
  • Its microencapsulated form + gastro-resistant capsules ensure targeted release in the colon for optimum efficacy, while minimising odours and improving digestive tolerance.
  • Butyrate is reputed to be the main source of energy for colonocytes, which maintain the integrity of tight junctions and help strengthen the intestinal barrier.
  • It is being studied for its potential ability to promote a healthy intestinal environment by stimulating mucin production and supporting a balanced composition of the microbiota.
  • It is also thought to help reduce intestinal inflammation by reducing the production of pro-inflammatory mediators.

Butyrate Max Bioactivity is a dietary supplement containing butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid that has been the subject of much scientific research into the intestinal barrier and microbiota.

The supplement is microencapsulated and highly dosed for exemplary bioavailability and efficacy.

Butyrate Max Bioactivity is therefore included in our category of products dedicated to gastrointestinal health.

Definition and benefits of a sodium butyrate dietary supplement

What is butyrate?

Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid naturally produced in the colon via the fermentation of dietary fibres by the intestinal microbiota.

It is one of the main metabolites produced by this bacterial activity.

What is the benefit of butyrate for intestinal health?

Studies suggest that butyrate helps to maintain a functional intestinal barrier and preserve the balance of the intestinal microbiota.

It would therefore be particularly useful in cases of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), excessive intestinal permeability (leaky gut) or intestinal dysbiosis.

More specifically, butyrate is being studied for 4 main benefits:

  • providing an energy source for colonocytes: butyrate is thought to play an essential role in feeding the cells that line the colon, known as colonocytes. It appears to be the main source of energy for these cells, helping to maintain their health and proper functioning (1);
  • stimulating mucin production: this short-chain fatty acid may also stimulate the production of mucin, a component of the mucus that forms a protective barrier on the intestinal epithelium, the inner lining of the intestine. This layer of mucus not only protects the epithelial cells from erosion caused by the acidic contents of the stomach and pathogens, but also facilitates the transit of waste (2);
  • strengthening tight junctions: butyrate is being studied for its potential ability to strengthen the tight junctions essential for maintaining the integrity of the intestinal barrier. It is thought to act by up-regulating the expression of their proteins, such as claudin and occludin, and by reducing the production of mediators responsible for intestinal inflammation (3);
  • contributing to the balance of the intestinal microbiota: butyrate is thought to play a role in the balance of the intestinal microbiota by supporting a favourable environment for the development of beneficial bacteria (4).

Why choose sodium butyrate?

Butyrate is naturally present in the body in ionised form, often associated with minerals such as sodium.

Sodium butyrate is therefore a physiologically suitable form, ideal for use as a dietary supplement.

It provides you with a controlled and constant supply of butyrate, independent of the body's natural production, which can be affected by a number of factors: low-fibre diet, imbalances in the microbiota (e.g. after taking antibiotics), increased digestive sensitivity, etc.

4 key points and reasons to buy our sodium butyrate

Our sodium butyrate dietary supplement, Butyrate Max Bioactivity, has 4 strong points:

  1. microencapsulation combined with gastro-resistant capsules for targeted release in the colon: sodium butyrate remains an unstable and sensitive compound. Our formula is based on microencapsulation, which protects the active ingredient throughout digestive transit, and gastro-resistant capsules capable of withstanding gastric acidity. This dual protection preserves the integrity of the butyrate and ensures that it is released directly into the large intestine (colon), for maximum bioavailability and efficacy;
  2. a high dosage inspired by science: each daily dose of the product contains 1,390 mg of encapsulated sodium butyrate, giving a daily intake of 1,000 mg of butyrate. This particularly high amount has been established in accordance with the most advanced scientific data;
  3. a well-tolerated formula with reduced odour: the encapsulated form also significantly reduces the characteristic odour of butyrate. It also helps to improve digestive tolerance by preventing premature release into the stomach, which can lead to certain digestive discomforts (abdominal discomfort, reflux), making it easier to take on a daily basis;
  4. vegetable capsules and natural excipients: Butyrate Max Bioactivity's gastro-resistant capsules are 100% vegetable, made from hypromellose (a cellulose derivative) and gellan gum (a gelling agent obtained by fermentation). The formula also includes only 2 excipients, both of natural origin: vegetable stearin (a derivative of vegetable fatty acids) and corn starch.

Any questions?

Our team of nutrition experts and scientists has the answers.

What is the difference between butyrate and probiotics?

Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid produced by bacteria in the microbiota from ingested and fermented fibres.

This compound is therefore referred to as a ‘metabolite’ or ‘postbiotic’.

Many studies classify it as the main fuel for colon cells.

Probiotics, on the other hand, are living microorganisms that are healthy for the intestinal microbiota.

In short, butyrate is a 'fuel' produced in the colon, while probiotics are the bacteria that contribute, in some cases, to its production.

What are the possible side effects of sodium butyrate?

Sodium butyrate is generally well tolerated.

In rare cases, it may cause gastrointestinal problems at the start of treatment, such as increased bowel movements or abdominal discomfort.

These effects are usually transient and/or due to excessive intake.

Is it a good idea to take butyrate supplements?

According to scientific studies, taking butyrate is generally beneficial when natural production becomes insufficient, particularly in the case of a low-fibre diet or an imbalance in the microbiota.

It could therefore help to support intestinal health, in addition to a suitable diet including well-tolerated fibres such as psyllium or oats, as well as foods rich in polyphenols such as red fruit or cocoa.

Which synergistic food supplements should I take with sodium butyrate?

In addition to taking butyrate directly, we recommend that you consume fibre to increase your own natural production. For sensitive people, however, it is preferable to opt for fibres that are well tolerated, particularly those low in FODMAPs, fermentable carbohydrates that can cause bloating and transit problems. For example, you can opt for blond psyllium (buy the Psyllium Husk supplement).

Finally, don't overlook the role of probiotics, the beneficial microorganisms in your digestive system. Some of these 'good bacteria' can be ingested in significant quantities via food supplements designed to promote a balanced microbiota. In particular, there are synergistic probiotic formulas that combine the species Saccharomyces boulardii, Bifidobacterium longum infantis or Lactobacillus acidophilus, which are renowned for their role in digestive comfort (see Colon Friendly).

You may also be interested in other probiotics, such as spore probiotics, which are particularly resistant (buy SporesBiotics Formula), our best-selling multi-strain probiotic (Probio Forte) or formulas covering an even broader spectrum of microorganisms (such as Full Spectrum Probiotic).
